The 2019-2020 season was the 3rd year of our program, and our 2nd full season of competition. After last year's success with the #999 winning the Intermediate National Championship and the #000 coming in 2nd Nationally, a very high bar was set for our program. Additionally our #999 team only had 5 returning team members so 2/3 of that team was brand new. Nevertheless our goal was to do our very best at every event in order to repeat our previous year's performance - and boy did they ever!
We got started with a bang and stayed in the top 2 spots throughout the entire season. The final 3 races of the season were expected to be a challenge and we were excited about it, but we were thrown an unprecedented curve ball with the COVID-19 pandemic. We were not allowed to travel out of state for the Hazel Green race in March and the final 2 races in April & May ended up being cancelled. Based on the standings at that time our #999 team was named National Champion for the Intermediate Modified division, and our #000 team finished 2nd.
In six race events the #999 team earned a grand total of 542.78 national points (sum of all points earned), 282.36 regional points (best 3 races), and logged a total of 342.62 miles during race heats. This gave them an average of traveling 28.55 miles per 90 minute race heat, and an average speed of 19.03 miles per hour.
In those same six race events our #000 team earned a grand total of 535.01 national points (sum of all points earned), 279.84 regional points (best 3 races), and logged a total of 322.67 miles during race heats. This gave them an average of traveling 26.89 miles per 90 minute race heat, and an average speed of 17.93 miles per hour.
We could not be more proud of our two teams for logging a combined total of 665.29 miles during race heats because it accounts for 25.4% of all the miles logged by all Intermediate Modified teams (2,619.88). This is not easy task and requires a well tuned & maintained race car by our build team & pit crew, and consistently good decisions by our drivers on the race track. Additionally our presentation team did a great job throughout the season of consistently producing top notch presentations that scored well.
We’d like to thank our sponsors, team parents, & our school administration for their support. Coaching these two teams has been an honor and a privilege, and definitely one of the highlights of my 16 years at Long Cane Middle School. Congratulations to Cougar Strong Racing #999 & #000 - #1 & #2 in the Nation for the second consecutive year!
